I have Audacity to edit WAV files. I don't want to make it the default program, but I often want to use it to open them just after I download them from my note-taker, to normalize the files, etc. So I use the "open with" option when I right click the icon. Well, Audacity, in that menu, is listing as "The Free blah blah blah..." and I just would like it to say "Audacity". This is a somewhat petty tweak, I admit, but I would like to know how to do it. How do I edit the text of the Programs as they are written in the right-click "open with" menu. The text for Audacity I want to change appears to be the "description" field in the "properties" window of the Audacity.exe icon... but it is uneditable in that window. Where do I go to change it?

Search registry for the free blah blah blah. Dunno why I think it should be there.
I read it wrong and answer it wrong too. So get off my case you peanut.

Yes, you should be able to change it in the Registry, but be careful!
I'll suggest an option. How about using 'Send to' instead of 'Open With'? Copy and paste the Audacity shortcut to the 'Sendto' folder. It's normally at
C:\Documents and Settings\Your user name\Sendto. Then you can rename the shortcut to whatever you want.

The location in the registry is this
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
. + *
.. + OpenWithListYou can remove whatever you don't want or if you don't want any of it just remove the subkey OpenWithList
You can also remove the entire Open With if you don't want the Open With on the menu [except for unregistered filetypes] by removing the following as well..
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
. + *
.. + shellex
... + ContextMenuHandlers
.... + Open WithYou can also add a New Action for any extension in the Folder Options>File Types >"extension" giving you a second, third, fourth or unlimited programs to open the same filetype when selected from the right-click menu for a particular extension. The default open will stay unchanged unless you change it. This is called Multi-Associating
An action is simply a name you choose, such as Audacity or whatever followed by the path to the application you wish to open it with.
Backup [export] all reg keys you wish to delete or modify first then save the changes as well.

Sorry Folks... RegEdit is like a wall inside a pyramid to me... I'm not going anywhere near it! Couldn't find Audacity there that showed anything like what I needed to reword...
Aegis' Send To option suggestion is safe, easy and fits my bill just fine... never really used it except to put shortcuts onto the desktop.. so I tried some of the other options... the "to mail recipient" is great for when I find a file I want a friend to hear and it attaches it to an email ready for composing! I removed "to floppy" but the "to drive f:" (my dvd burner) is also going to be handy instead of having to open up the f: window, reduce it to a unobstrusive size and then drag and drop from my "editted audioclips" folder window to it all the time.
I had to use search to find "send to" folder... it was hidden... and using "open containing folder" from search results also didn't make it come up. I had to hit properties in the search result window and clear the "hidden" box, etc. I guess I could hide it again, now that I've gotten what I want out from it... Thanks again.
