Reply: (edit)was it working when you had it set to static? do you have a ISP? Most of us know who were are using without thinking about it. Sounds like perhaps you don't have a ISP [internet service provider]? Reply: (edit)Are you talking about a public IP address or a private IP address. If its a public, then Aegis' answer is correct. Your ISP issues public IP addresses, you can't just make up your own. If a private IP address you need a router with DHCP. As you don't have a phone Email your ISP. Stuart

Reply: (edit)>> Address Type: Assigned by DHCP (So i think i have private internet and router with DHPC) << It is a private address and it is dynamic although some routers do issue the same IP address every time. So why do you want a dynamic private address. What are you hoping to achieve? By the way, giving out a private IP address is no trust at all. It is of no interest to anyone intent on nefarious activity. There must be thousands of computers throughout the world with the same private address. Mine is 192.168.2.5 which is probably more common. It's the 192.168.x.x that does it. Its your public IP address, the one given to you by your ISP, that the rest of the world sees. Between your public address and your private address you have NAT (Network Address Translation) performed by your router. Stuart

Reply: (edit)I think exco you are completely misunderstanding the principle. There is nothing to be gained by typing in an IP address the selecting obtain IP address automatically. One just overrides the other. You can in set the IP address to anything within the range 192.169.123.xxx that is not being used elsewhere. But to what advantage? What are you trying to achieve. Let DHCP do the work, it is easier and avoids duplicate IP address problem which can happen if you start entering IP addresses manualy. There is no advantage whatsoever is constantly changing your private IP address so there is little facility to do so. If you are using DHCP it is the router that is doing all the work. If security is your concern then you are barking up the wrong tree as far as IP addresses go. Stuart

Reply: (edit)why do you think you need to change your ip? You are behind a router which subnet 192.168.123.x. If you change your ip to say 10.10.10.10 you will have changed your ip to a static one but now you will be alone on the lan and you will have no internet access because you are not in the 192.168.123.x subnet. We need to understand why you think you need to change your subnet ip.

Reply: (edit)First off, Hackers and gamers can't see that subnet IP all they can see is the one supplied from your Internet Service Provider http://www.ipchicken.com/ This will show you your true IP address. What you are seeing is the IP subnet address that YOUR NETWORK ROUTER gives you! Changing that will not accomplish anything... Your ISP is the only person that can change your IP address. Operating Costs = the cost of operating a business Profits = revenues over and above the operating costs. Taxes = operating costs mandated by gov. TaxPayer = what you are called by the gov.

Reply: (edit)Static IP is given to you by your ISp which is always the same Ip whenever you connect to the internet but dynamic IP changes each time you connect to the internet (I mean for example, if you restart your computer, the ip changes and when you restart again, it changes to a different one).. If you surf the web, then you don't need a static IP.. Just go on with dynamic..

Reply: (edit)Your ISP is the only one that can do anything with your public IP address. It belongs to them and is only loaned to you for the duration of your contract. Stuart
