Are you using WinXP home or pro? Are you using at least SP1?

I can't find any indication that data would be lost if converting a basic disk to a dynamic disk.

Are you sure you didn't attempt to convert ONE partition of a basic disk?

Have you looked in Disk Management to see what is there?

They say they can recover it. I'm doubtful!
I've never used this software so I make no recommendations.
I've always considered Dynamic disks a problem and not a solution and would never convert any of my drives to Dynamic Disc.
YMMV

The popup should have only said you may not be able to access it with OS's that can't read dynamic disks.

"Best Practices", Event viewer, host file, perfmon, are in my top 10

That is what is confusing to me. You can't reverse the conversion but I don't think existing files on a basic disk are damaged due to the conversion.

Conversion wouldn' work at all if the disk had been formatted FAT32 would it?
