Hi, I've had this burner (DUW1608/ARR) for about 6 months and have had no problems with it until today.
I went to burn some files to a dvdr and noticed that Windows (XP 64-bit edition) was detecting my dvdrw drive as a cd drive.
When I take the dvdr media out it goes back to dvd/dvdrw drive. But again, once I put it back in, it lists as a cd drive and won't burn any dvd's with any program. It will however suggest I can burn CD/CDRW's. I was using the Nero and the option to change from cd or dvd burning is now gone and only allows me to burn cd's. I've tried different dvdr media to no avail. Normal dvds and dvd-based pc games seem to work fine.
I've tried removing the upper and lower filters from the {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} key in the registry. There was only an upperfilter and removing it did nothing. I also set the dvdrw drive to a master drive and still nothing. I even disabled the bult-in windows burning feature.

No, it just lists it as "CD Drive (D:)" and under type it lists "CD Drive." When I try to access the blank dvd it says that "D:\ is not accessible."

I've now discovered that it seems it won't write CD-R media as well.

When I put a blank cd in either of my 2 XP machines the drive say cd drive and when I take out the blank dvd it says dvd rw drive again. I think that part is normal. You might try to uninstall it from the device manager then restart and let the drivers for it get reinstalled again. Did you try the built in software that comes with XP?

I just decided to format and reinstall windows, that seems to have fixed it. I've been wanting to get off of windows xp 64 bit edition anyway since it's not compatible with my tv tuner card.
