dvd-rw drive not working 100%

I installed a NEC ND-1300A DVD-RW drive in my computer recently and it has limited functionality. It can recognize and write to blank dvd media, but when the screen comes up asking you what windows should do with the new media it has found, it displays the dvd-r as a "blank cd". The drive cannot read any recorded dvds or cds, even items it has burned immediately after creating them. I was thinking this was a driver issue, but the drive apparently only has firmware updates, I am currently running the newest one (firmware 1.0B). This probably isn't a problem with the OS as much as a problem with some component of XP, given I used this drive before on a different machine running XP with no problems at all. I tried running programs like WinXP Manager to see if I could resolve the conflict, but to no avail. Any ideas? (let me know if I left out any info needed)

un install it using device manager...restart and re install it..sometimes they just glitch up during install. Also check that all cables are firmly in place.
Always back up...I JUST LOST 287 gigs entertainment!

My guess is the 'read' laser is shot. The drive uses a different laser to write.
