Hi
I have a problem with both drives on my computer. They do not read any type of disc. I have tried everything, i tried cd gone, i checked the upperfilters/lowerfilters and a couple of other fixing tools. But still doesn't work i even opened it up checked the cables, i unplugged them plugged back in and checked inside the drives and they were completely clean. I am guessing this a problem on the software side of things, the only burning software i have is nero 7, what do i do now?
Thanks Connor

For basic troubleshooting purposes you need to determine if this is a Windows issue or hardware. Try booting to a CD from start up. Use a known good bootable CD, like your WinXP install CD. Make sure the CD is listed before the HDrive in the BIOS boot order.
If both drives can and do boot to a CD in the startup mode then it is a problem with WinXP. Try that and post back.
What is the history of the drives and have they worked in the recent past?

Hi
I have recently tried to boot from cd i tried the ubuntu linux cd my Dvd drives have worked before i dont know what it is
Thanks Connor

no they do not work the ubuntu cd wont boot and its completely clean just delivered, my drives wont read anything. This is why i need a dvd drive i am desperate to get ubuntu installed on this system.

Are both drives on the same cable? If so, one of them may have died. You may need to re-jumper and connect them one by one to find out.

Ok i dont know if id did this right but i have a cable connected to both drives and then to the processor i disconected one and it didn't show in my computer but when i click the dvd rw drive with the cd in it shows like a blank cd the cd is not blank. I shall try the other one please stay in touch i need help.

You can't simply disconnect one drive without checking the jumpers on the back of the drive. If the jumper on the drive is set for CS (cable select) that is an acceptable setting. If set to slave it may not work, even if the drive is actually good.
Why are complicating things. First off, don't mess with anything in there while the computer is plugged in. Take static precautions. When only one drive is connected to the cable it must either be set for CS or Master. Look at the link below to understand about the jumper.

Er i dont have a master cable to use with any of my drives. So i cant try them with a master cable.

You don't need a special cable you need to set a jumper on the back of each drive. Did you look at the link I posted in #7?

Your choice, did you look at the link I posted in my response #7. Doubleclick on the link and you will see a picture of the backend of a CD drive showing the jumpers. Because you can use two drives on one cable the computer needs to know which one is which. The jumpers and/ or location on the cable tell the computer which drive it is.
Look at the picture. Stamped in the case metal are identifiers labeled CS (cable select) SL (slave), MA (master). If the drive is going to be the ONLY drive connected to the cable it should be jumpered as MA.
