Hi

My DVD-ROM Drive is producing the following error messages:
“D:\ is not accessible.

The volume does not contain a recognized file system. Please make sure that all required file system drivers are loaded and that the volume is not corrupt.”

and

“Windows cannot read from this disk. The disk might be corrupted, or it could be using a format that is not compatible with Windows”

I have tried searching the internet for solutions, including Microsoft’s Support Site, but there appears to be none for Windows XP. There is a solution for the same problem on Windows NT (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;169620) but this doesn’t work for XP.

I have managed to install something from CD but I have had this problem before and since installing. Occasionally it works but then half-way through installation or accessing files it will produce the first error message above.

The second error message is displayed when I have inserted a disk but have been unable to open it at all (i.e. in My Computer there is no CD name shown, as if there is no disk in at all)

I have tested the CDs on my PC and they all work fine, so they are not corrupted, suggesting that Windows doesn’t recognize the file system. The properties of the disks I have used show the File System as CDFS. Other than that I can only think of it being a bad drive, but it is a brand new laptop (Toshiba Sat Pro A10)

Take in in for repairs while it's still under warranty.
It is quite possible that a new drive is malfunctioning as you describe!

Try visiting the Homepage from the DVD Rom manufacturer and searching for a new Firmware Flash update. This often solves many problems!

Thanks for the replies. Toshiba do not provide new Firmware updates to prevent users from damaging their drives, nor do they provide drivers because all of the drivers come with Windows.

Only other thing I can think of then is to reinstall Windows to calibrate the drivers properly, but I dont see why I should have to do this. Unless there are any other suggestions?

I am going to phone their support tomorrow as I havent received an e-mail response yet

Thanks again
