Comment:

my dvd/cd drive is not working. On start up if I have a disk in the drive all i get is a black screen with a cursor flashing at the top left, when I remove the disk the system then starts up. Unfortunately, I cannot get the dvd/cd drive to work, I've tried to remove it and update the drivers but it still isn't working. Help

Dave

????? Sorry, I haven't got a clue what you are talking about, but I have tried various CDs including software installations and although the light goes on at the disk drive nothing happens for ages and then it asks me to put a cd into the drive.

I don't know what jumper settings are, grateful if you'd give me a clue where to look and where will I find out what ide channel i'm using.

If it helps, I know my husband uses the machine to download music and upload from the digital camera, but I'm at a loss to know where to start.

Grateful for your help.

No I can't try the cd drive in another computer, it's fixed to this laptop. I am familiar with the device manager and I have tried to reinstall updated drivers, however it doesn't seem to help.

Posting the EXACT name of your Laptop Computer as displayed on its case might help us a lot in finding its hardware SPECS from the manufacturer's website if available to formulate troubleshoots and avoid suggestions like switching parts with another computer, a very common and easy troubleshoot often done on Desktops:-).

Is this a CD-ROM ,DVD-ROM, CD-RW , DVD-RW or Combo drive?

Do you see that in listed as an Optical Drive in My Computer ?

Do you see it with its Brand name without any error symbols [like ? ! X ]by its side in the Device Manager ?

Do you have any Burning Program like Nero or Easy CD Creator ? in this Computer.

If you want more help, please post the above details and whether there were any changes made in the software or hardware (addition or removal) or any severe Power Fluctuations while the computer was on, prior to the present problem.
