Right click "my computer" go to Properties, hardware tab then to Device manager..

Locate the drive and see if it's listed as a DVD rw. or if it only see's it as a cd drive..

If it sees it at a cd drive. I would run Windows Updates and choose Custom updates. then look to see if there are any device updates.

Also look at the software that may have came with the drive and see if you can reload any drivers for it.

Do you have any DVD software?

You dvd drive could be locked.. Any dvd software unlocks this when loaded and pushed play..

Try downloading some trial software like PowerDVD (My favorite) or WinDVD.

Load that and see if you can play a dvd with that.

Do you have any other cd\dvd drives in your system?

If you do. try pulling them out, and putting the your optiwrite in its place.

OR is there another computer you can put this problem dvd writer in? If the problem is in the 2nd computer I would blame the drive.
