dvd will not play, drivlers?

I am trying to fix a gateway laptop 3 months old. dvd's will not play, apparently did initially but will not play now. I reloaded all video graphic dirvers and downloaded latest firmware. windlows media player will not start. did every google fix i could find. i put in a movie with a video program and tried to play: message is: cannot render video check graphics drivers for latest DirectX. I tried this:

ok, I downloaded VideoLan and set the resolution at 800 x 600. i can now view a dvd. i went in and changed the resolution back to the highest and it still works!!! thank you so very much.
