YOu can use Windows Media Player to play DVD's. I do. I also use WinDVD. Just right click on your DVD drive, and click "Open with", and choose WMP.

Duncan,

You can do this with software...hundreds are available. Type "convert dvd to avi" into google and you could be there looking for hours. I personally don't do any dvd ripping, but I convert alot of video from a camera.

There's alot of different formats with different quality settings and different codecs. AVI will usually give you a smaller file, but MPEG will give you better quality (depending on your settings...there's MPEG 1 and MPEG 2).

There's no simple way to tell you how to go about this other than..."get ready to search and learn"

Get the gordian knot rippack from doom9.org. It is esentially a gui front end for several apps used for ripping/encoding high qulity. DVD decrypter, dvd2avi, nandubmod, besweet, Vobsub. You can make very high quality divx encoded avi's or simply plug your generated d2v or avisynth script into tmpgenc and make a very nice mpg video.
It will require some reading to learn how each app does it's thing but very much worth it.

Thanks again guys I tried out DVDX and it worked great with ease.

Just one point on the doom9.org when I tried their site for the software it asked for login and password for members which I did not have and would have to buy?.

best wishes to all for the festive period.

duncan
