Thanks for your advice.

i've heard, and is it so, that most of the newer dvd backup and copy software doesn't "crack or remove waterspots or copyrights" like say last years versions.

for instance my bro-in-law is an IT administrator and had bought a program to backup, and ended up having to get a copy of a friends older version of the same software. just wandering

i use a $60 version of dvd cloner to backup an Love It! just put a disc in each drive and hit copy.

I've also done tech tv's version of backing up with dvd shrink and something else.

I was wandering what methods some of you use

I just went at my friend's who has a software called CopyDVD. He wasn't there, so i couldnt ask him all the functions.

It says that the Expected file size will be around 3500MB to convert to VCD.
Is that normal?

Isn't there a way to use only one or two blank CDs to copy the DVD?

The size of the VCD would depend upon how much quality of the video you want to sacrifice.

Commercial DVDs can be as large as 9gb. To get that on 1-2 CDs you would have to SEVERLY compromise the quality.

You can learn a lot about VCD at the following site:

It's free and yes, it will convert it to 2 CD's. it will also remove any copyright codes.

The size of the VCD will depend on how long the movie is, not how much quality you want to sacrific. VCD is a set bitrate of 1150 kbps.

I use smartripper to rip the dvd to the hard drive, then simpledivx to convert the film to divx format. but then again i assume you dont want divx format, and wish to stay with dvd format but still on cd, well then i dont think it can be done. i use DVD Shrink, to shrink down large dvd's as i backup my own dvd's but i then burn to dvd afterwards. try use dvd shrink, take off all languages except for english of course and shrink it down so it will fit onto a cd, burn it over and see if it plays! just an idea. email me on ur success!

Why bother messin around and waiting for the VOB file to be converted in SVCD format, as stevo said use "smart ripper" or "dvd dycrypter" to rip the DVD, then i use Pinnacle instant copy and instant copy hidden settings editor to shrink and burn that 9gb DVD onto one DVD-r or DVD+r while keeping everything that was on the original DVD "menus, extras" with no noticable quality loss.
It should be noted that this is only legal if you actually own the original DVD. "depending where in the world you live"

I say use smart ripper. DVD decrypter does look a hell of a lot better, but i used dvd decrypter once to rip a music video off a dvd so i can watch on hard drive instead. anyway later converted it to divx to compare file sizes, the file was a little bit fuzzy. dvd decrypter is a good program but not properly designed for ripping as it doesnt do a very good job, smart ripper is way more powerful and works like a charm!
