Hey, I have a DVD RW, and it used to play DVDs, now when I insert one it says:

Windows Media Player cannot play DVD video. Open Display in Control Panel, and then lower your screen resolution and color quality settings. To view the DVD Troubleshooter, click More Information.

No other players can play it either. What is wrong?

What Version of Media Player are you using?
To find your version, Open Media Player and Click Help>About Media Player and read from the popup.

You may need to reload the software that came with your burner. I have run into this problem before where Windows for some reason "loses" the software, particularly if it's NOT used all that often.

Lessons learnt the hard way are not easily forgotten.

I'm using Windows Media 10. And I was used to watch it with POWERDVD... neither of them work. And I don't have any separate software for the POWER DVD... what do you think may have caused the problem. The last time I watched a movie was 3 month ago. So any solutions?

Real Player gives me this report:

The DVD cannot be played. Key exchange for DVD copy protection failed.

Short of reloading Power DVD mate, I really can't say what the problem would be. All I do know is that it's been my experience that Xp "loses" that particular software if it's not used regularly. Has happened on several systems I've worked on over the past few years.

If you're having problems with 2 different player programs then it would stand to reason that the players are not the problem.

Key exchange failure indicates a problem with the DVD or the drive.

Media player indicates a possible video problems. So also have a look at your video card and direct x.

What doesn video card have to do with it? Actually it failes to work on 4 different dvd players. My video card is onboard and Direct x is set to 9 version. That's pretty much it. Why would it fail? It opens up the files good, it will show Mpeg 4 movies... but no DVD movies... why?

How should I upgrade my Video Drivers? The thing is that the DVD used to play before... it is just now... something is wrong.

Try this:

Click Start> Run
In Open: box, type mplayer2, and then click OK.
See if the DVD video plays
If it fails try:
Click Start, click Run, and then type desk.cpl in the Open box. Or, right-click an empty area of the desktop, and then click Properties.
• On the Settings tab, move the screen resolution slider to 800 X 600.
• Select 16-bit for the color quality, and then click OK.
Some display drivers cannot support DVD playback at higher resolutions and color depths. If this solution works, by using an updated driver, you may be able to play the DVD at higher color depths and resolutions.

Is the DVD you are trying to play a Dual Layer DVD but your device can not play DL?

Does it play in the DVD player connected to your TV?

Have you tried any other DVDs to see if they play as they did before?

Well, I already looked up in microsoft and I do not know if it will work for me. I have already tried lowering down my video settings and I do not see any light so far. But, I need to try some other stuff too. I am at work right now, therefore, I will do it when i get home.
