DVD player won't recognize DVD

Power DVD won't recognize DVD but will read and playback VCD. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the programs but Windows Media and Power DVD will not recognize my DVD's. The system recognizes the drive as a DVD-ROM, but I get no playback. What should I do?
