Hello,

I have a problem with DVD playback on my PC. When I open a dvd in either Windows Media Player (11) or Power DVD it plays sound but doesn't play video. What can I do? Are there any codecs I have to download and install? I recently reformatted my computer - may this have anything to do with the error?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Whenever you load Windows from scratch you must install the drivers for your mboard after Setup is finished, especially the ones for the main chipset, so that Windows has the proper drivers for and information about your mboard. If you didn't do that, DVD drives and CD/DVD burners will probably not be detected properly.
In your case, the main chipset drivers may be in the software downloads for your Acer model, or you may have to go to the web site of the chipset manufacurer to get them once you determine which chipset you have.

i would say so. if your not into installing lots of codecs like me go hear and download and install the xvid and the divx code(lift side), or download one of the many free bundles, ie kazza pack.

http://www.xvidmovies.com/guides/

for future problems download gspot to Analise and to tell you what codec you may need for the given movie.

Standard DVD's use the MPEG2 format, you don't need to install xvid or divx codecs.

Installing Power DVD should have installed the correct codec needed for viewing DVD's. You may have some sort of video overlay running.

Right click on your desktop and choose properties. Click on the settings tab and then click on the advanced button. Look around in the setting for video overlay and see if anything is running.
