I have a Toshiba laptop (6 months old) with DVD rom. The problem I that it only reads original CD’s and doesn’t read any CD’s that I made with info on eg: power point files!!! It is a Toshiba DVD rom. What must be done so that CD’s can be read?

CDs that are purchased from the store are different from those that you burn on your computer. Older drives will not read CD-Rs. As well the XBOX won't read CD-Rs. It is possible that the drive you have wasn't designed to read CDRs.
DVD drives use a seperate technology for the laser which reads the data. For it to be able to read CDR/RW it needs a seperate laser. CDR's are usually pretty readable in any newer drive. If it is CDRW's though, you would need to install a reading program (ex. UDF Reader)before it could access the disc.
