I've seen that there are several posts about this problem around, but I haven't found a single one with the problem solved! So, if there's someone who REALLY knows about this:
The laptop has Mats---a UJ-811 DVD drive. It all worked fine for more than a year. Now, it doesn't read or write any CDs (audio, data). It only reads and writes DVDs. I don't know about burning software installations/uninstallations on it, because I don't know the exact date when the CD reading function stopped working.
After I insert a CD-ROM, nothing really happens. I go to Windows Explorer and double-click the CD-ROM drive icon. Then it says: "The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error." What does this mean?
Please provide me some advice on things I should check/correct, starting from the easiest one. I would like to get an answer from someone who has solved this kind of a problem once.

See if this helps
You receive an I/O device error message when you try to use your CD drive in Windows XP" It'll Get Ya When You Aint Lookin "

This may help.
If you are comfortable editing the registry:
Create a Restore point and back up the registry.Open regedit.
Look for;HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\CurrentControlSet\SetControlClass.
Key name: {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Value Data:[Delete all value data from upper and lower filters]
Note-Do not delete the key or the multi-string values. Delete only the data values.
You may have more than one entry.Exit regedit and reboot.
