DVD drive acting strange.

Microsoft Windows xp professional w/sp2

Specs: Windows XP PRO, AMD processor/ 1GB Ram

The DVD drive in my computer is acting strange these days. Before it was working fine. I was able to read and write any DVDs and CDs. But from last many days its not letting me read or write any DVDs but only CDs. If I insert any burned DVD in the drive it shows up as blank disk. But the same disk when I put in another computer it showed up the contents in it. If I insert a blank DVD to burn it with some data it tries to burn it; but somwhere in the middle of the burning process it stops and eject the disk saying burning process failed. With the CDs read and write process are working fine.

I am having Xp SP2 as my OS. Processor is of AMD. 1GB Ram. DVD/CD drive is of LG. Nero is the burning software.

What could be the error? (When I informed about this to the computer shop guy from whom I bought the computer, he said its happening so because the DVD/CD drive is slowly dying, so, better I buy new DVD/CD drive and attach it with this computer.) Do you think what he said is true? If so then how will I trust a drive which I want to buy as what even that gives me the same type of error in the near future after I buy it? How can I solve the issue? Please help.

Thanks in advance.

I had a similar problem, it was the drive.

I think there are 2 lasers on a DVD/CD, seems like the DVD
laser has packed up.
