when i back up some movies in avi or mpg format
my sonic recordnow seems to burn a blank dvd fine, but once its burned and i try to put it back in the drive to read ot burn other files.. it wont read it( thus it wont let me add any more files

the funny thing is older dvds seem to work( can be read and written to, but the recent ones cannot. and if i try it in another laptop, it seems to read them fine.

can anyone help

i have been using memorex dvd+r for a while and it usually works fine

my burner drive is an NEC ND-6500a

i dont know if its dirty.it seems fine.
can be have something to do with DLA? bad discs? i kept using many discs to test.
it appears to write to it fine but it wont let me read the written data on this drive.
it makes no sense
could it be the firmware?( is there such a thing as a firmware virus?)

You told us the burner brand & the media you burn but you left the burner software itself. What software have you used?

This sounds like a really trivial problem so I wouldn't start looking at DLA and stuff to fix this. You'll probabaly break more than you'll fix with this approach.

Lets take a closer look at what your doing.

HOW are you burning? Give us a complete walk through as to how your adding files to the compilation and burning it. LOTS OF DETAIL!!

EXACTLY WHAT MEDIA are you burning to? If it's a TDK DVD-R 4x, then please advise us exactly what your using.

HOW are you attempting to playback the media, again LOTS OF DETAIL!!

Good luck,

J.

memorex dvd+r 16X or maxelle 16X

it seems if the disc is blank the drive can write to it. but once its written to. it wont read it on that drive
if i try on another laptop. it can be read fine.
it can read CD-data disc and burn to them and read it
but it cant do it on dvd+rs not anymore.

i backed up some movies i made with my digital camera.
they are on AVI or MPG format.

i use sonic record now... i put in a dvd+rdisc.... i burn the data but i leave the disc open to i can add more videos if need be to fill the disc up, this has been working fine for a year.

once i write to it. it wont read that same data if i place it in the drive.
it says D:\ uis not accessible ,incorrect function

but if i were to create a dvd video disc ( by using mpg files and author it( with TMPGENC AUTHOE ) then use a dvd software( such as dvd cloner 2.0)that can be played in standalone DVD players i can watch it that way,it seems to still do that fine. just not data for a dvd+r

1. it says D:\ is not accessible ,incorrect function

i just tried a cd-r
it doesnt seem to need to be a finalized disc either
i used to read hundreds of dvd+rs not finalized

now it seems even if i put in a regular dvd movie it says "please insert a disc into drive D:"

2. no i dont i click ont he data button and usually once i put a disc in it reads the disc and tells me whats on it.

i tried the load disc . it says please insert an appendable data disc and try again.

i tried to upgrade the firmware of the
nec nd-6500a dvd burner. doesnt seem to do anything.
is it possible that this is a stepper motor? ive read somehere where if its not working properly it cant make small enough adjustments to read dvd data( but can read cd data)when i put a dvd movie in it does make repetitive loud noises..

The drive is worn out. The laser is no longer up to the task of reading DVDs.
Replace the drive

I used to have a signature but it disappeared and I just couldn't be bothered writing another so please feel free to ingore this.

i called up dell they said its the hardware( especially after i tested my laptop with an external dvd burner to see if it was a software problem)
the external dvd burned worked fine. so its the internal dvd drive thats the culprit.

thank you all for any of the help u gave me
matt
