Hi, I'm a novice as this question will prove. How do I burn an avi file to dvd so it is playable on my home dvd player? I have cucusoft avi to mpeg converter and cucusoft dvd burning programs, but my player gives the message "disc unsupported"

Please help all you wonderful experts out there!

Bruce55

You may find it's your DVD player that is the problem. Do you know for sure it can play DVD-R discs? And is the player region the same as the disc region?

I'm assuming you have burnt your DVD with the video image and it plays OK on your PC DVD but not in your stand alone player.

What you will have to look for in burning software is something that relates to finalising the burn/disk, I believe in Nero it's something like a checkbox that says finalise, no further writing possible (or words to the effect of).

Your stand alone player's brain should now be able to see where the video starts & ends so it can get on with the job of displaying it.

i use tmpgenc - the encoder will convert (most) videos to mpeg-2 (format needed for dvd compatibility) and the authoring software
will create the menus and vob files-
(simple explanation: you cant burn an avi to disc and have it play in a dvd player - videos must be of a certain format and then
put in a file / folder structure that a dvd player can read - tmpgenc can do all that)

oh - ps - dvd players can be picky about the type of dvd media you are using - even if the dvd is authored correctly and may not read if the player doesnt like the media its burned on -
guide to good / bad media:

this software will tell you what kind of discs you have:

OK lets all scare him away..

Most dvd players will play any type of disk, WEll [erhaps if you dvd player is 8 years old is wont.. I have one that is 5 years old. And I bought it at 70 bucks new.. It plays all disks..

As for your situation.. I dont recommend tmpgenc for the novice user..

Download this program here. DVD2SVCD
http://www.dvd2dvd.org/

it will load your avi file and convert it for you.. This is the best novice program out there for what your looking for.

------
Get FireFox You'll be happy you did.

At this point, I think getting it working wins over quality! ;-)

Hey JoseBillBR

if you knew anything about the program you would know that it used to be called AVI2DVD

They just changed the name to fit todays age.. Along with that you CAN convert the AVI file to DVD format with this program.. SO YOU WILL GET YOUR 700meg AVI ONTO A 4.5gig DVD

Shut up and talk only what you know about or you look stupid.

bruce, you say you are a novice to this, so pardon me if i sound patronising, i really don't mean it.
Is your drive a dvd burner or a cd burner?
you won't burn a dvd if you have a cd writer, even though the software makes the file for you.
I only ask because the problem seems to come when you want to burn it.
my apologies if i've offended.
Maybe you do have a dvd burner, and the problem may be an incorrect driver, or windows not seeing it as such.
