dvd burner wont read data disc

here is the deal...my Sony DRU500a dvd burner works fine when I put a standard dvd movie in....but..when I put a burned dvd disc in full of mp3's, pics, etc...it wont open...I know for a fact that these discs have worked before...I have used the drive to create them! I upgraded the firmware to the latest and greatest....any suggestions?
