hi there. my dvd burner is a cyberhome 16x dvd burner. its been working well for a while. recently i bought 2 seperate packs of 16x memorex dvd-r's. ones the older model pack ive been using forever, ones the new polka-dotted model dvd-r's. both are 16x. however, when i go to burn in nero, nero only lets me burn a dvd at 4x or 2x. what the heck? when i put in some like year old 8x disk i have lying around, it lets me select 8x. Get this though, when i put in a multi-session 16x memorex that ive burned something on already from a while ago, it lets me select 16x! what the heck is going on here?

DVD's have a code on them that the DVD burner reads to determine what speed it can write to on that media. The DVD burner has these codes in it's firmware. It could be that the codes on the new DVDs are not recognized by the burner. You could try updating the firmware.
Cyberhome is a rebranded drive, so you might have to search for the real manufacturer of that drive to get the correct firmware.

Well Since you installed that other DVD writable drive you probably need to uninstall both the drives and let windows install them again. On how to do this, Click start and then right click on my computer, and then left click on properties, this should bring up your system imformation, click on hardware and then click on device manager. Then click on IDE ATA controllers and uninstall both primary controllers, right click and uninstall. once both primarys are uninstall uninstall both dvd drives. Once that is done restart and let windows install it again. After the reboot it might bring up a window to install the drives, just click on next on all pop ups and it should install it right now. It may ask you to reboot. After the reboot again go to the device manager and right click on IDE ATA primary and click on properties. After which go to advance settings and make sure that both primarys are selected for DMA mode only. This should fix the issue and make it burn with 16X as default when burning with dvds, if the dvd's are 16x and the cd's to burn with the max that is able to burn at.
Keep us posted.

Jim, i think you misunderstood me (or maybe im misunderstanding ur answer). ive always had the same cyberhome dvd burner. its the different memorex dvd media that is not being read at 16x

What is the exact model of your burner?
The two 16x Cyberhome burners that i found both seem to be made by Phillips ( http://www.videohelp.com/dvdwriters... ).
The Cyberhome US site does appear to be down. here is the firmware page for the 1600 burner on the German site (English version): http://www.cyberhome.de/en/Download...
Michael J

mine is the DX162D.
the 1600 is a DVR, so i doubt that firmware will work w/ my burner

here is the link to the firmware for that model on the US site (which is down): http://cyberhome.com/1208/downloads...
Or, you can pick it up here: http://www.cyberdrive.com.tw/Firmwa...
The firmware goes back to 2004, must be a very old drive.

the drive is actually a DX162D-A. dont know if taht makes a diff.
michael, i dont think that site is up to date since my current firmware is 130F and the latest on there is 120F

If you do a google search, you'll know that memorex media is just about the least inexpensive media, and the absolute worst media there is. There are many dvd forums and every one of them will say the exact same thing; avoid Memorex at all costs. you certainly do get what you pay for.
Other problematic media is the inexpensive Imation available at Walmart; and the Staple's house brand is terrible too. They are manufactured with a lesser azo dye.
The better / best media is clearly any media manufactured in Japan; no question about it. I always, always look at the barcode on the wrapper to see where it was manufactured. I stay away from media made in Mexico, and definitely stay away from media manufactured in Taiwan.I hope you do some google searches so you can see and learn about different media. There's an excellent website that lists compatibility / success rates with various media and burners; unfortunately I can't remember the exact name of the website. maybe somebody here will know what I am talking about.....
Hope this helps a bit.... now go out and get some decent media.. Good luck.

Here is a good website to check out.
I forgot to mention (senior moment again..) that I have excellent success with Maxell made in Japan media burnt on my Plextor 716-A. Not a single bad burn yet, and the burns show very, very few errors when checked with Plextool's test software that came with my burner. But you might have better success with a different media... might have to try a few different ones that are made in Japan, with that better azo dye.

i know the quality disc is not great, but i've been using memorex for a while now and its worked fine for me. my dvd drive should still be able to burn these at 16x like its supposed to instead of for some crazy reason being limited to 4x.
btw, at the price i couldnt pass these up. 100 pack for $5 a few weeks ago.

That's a great price... I hope I didn't give the impression that I was making fun of Memorex; I wasn't.. Just thought I'd pass it along as I notice the negative Memorex comments so much on just about every dvd burning forum. I never used it.... I have not had a bad burn yet with the Maxell made in Japan media. Maybe my burner is quite happy with it; so I never tried any other brands...
My brother swears by Memorex too ! I guess if it works well, stick with it.

by no means am i like swearing by it, im just simply stating that ive used it in the past (seems to me like i always find that brand on sale when i need more dvds) and theyve worked; at 16x nonetheless.
btw, whats up w/ the cyberhome site? i wanna update the firmware to make sure that'll solve it, but its been down for at least a couple days now.
