What DVD burner do you have. I used to have a bad experience like that of 99% or that it said it was successful but then nothing plays. I found out most of the time it was the discs i was using. If they are a cheap brand then your gonna get tons of errors. i find in a stack of 100 all of them had problems in the last sectors of the disc towards the edges. so almost all movies were unplayable. check with different brands of disc to see if it improves. my experience it usually is the disc. go to vcd help website and they have a list of good working discs to buy and which ones to stay away from.
