This thread was previously posted in S&V Forum. I installed a new Plextor 740A dvd burner a couple of days ago replacing a dead HP dvd burner.
Problems started when I booted up my computer. The burner would not work and all I was doing was creating coasters. I had roxio version 6 (don't remember the exact version number) and I have nero 6.6 installed. I think drag to disk was causing problems.
Nothing would load up. IE explorer, firefox, control panel, anything. When viewing task manager, IE explorer, firefox and others were listed in the running processes but they were not loading up. I could not reboot, computer is useless when this happens and the only fix is manually turn pc off and turn back on.
What I did was completely removed roxio. Updated the Plextor firmare. Went to device manager and removed all drivers to my dvd burners, both IDE controllers and rebooted and let windows re-install the drivers (my hard drives are using sata controllers).
After that my burner works perfect. But I'm still having the IE, firefox ect loading up problem. Anyone have any ideas? I'm at a loss of what is going on with my computer.
This happens mostly when coming out of standby. I never had this problem until installing the plextor drive. I did not install anything from the cd that came with the drive.I have not installed any software in quite awhile. I have kaspersky and ewido running. I'm sure my computer is clean from viruses and spyware. I usually can fix problems like this but this one is over my head.
I have my plextor on the primary controller as master and my old TDK burner on my secondary controller as master.

This happens mostly when coming out of standby.
There is no advantage of using standby & hibernation particularly when your PC is a desktop. The purpose of these two power options is to conserve latop battery life. Once you ceased using standby your problem will disappear.

The advantage of using hibernation is that I don't have to wait 5 minutes for my pc to boot. I have always used hibernation in the past with no problem until now. This sucks I can't use hibernation anymore.
I removed the plextor drive and I'm still having this problem. I never seen or heard of installing a dvd drive screwing up a system like it did mine. System restore also didn't solve the problem.

Run chkdsk /r from the recovery console and sfc /scannow from the run menu. You will need the xp cd for the sfc /scannow.

per, I ran chkdsk /r from the recover console and it froze at 66% complete. Re-booted and chkdsk came on (i guess that’s what it was, looked like the famous windows 98 check disk thing after re-booting from a crash) but it went so fast I have no idea what it did or said. I ran sfc /scannow and after it completed nothing happened so I assume it didn't find anything. My system is running slower than my 486 with Windows 95 right now. This is crazy.
