I have a Dell 8100 1.4 ghz 256mb rdram Samsung DVD and Sony CD/RW. It was shipped with ME installed.

I decided to install the XP upgrade, and noticed my DVD was listed under My Computer, but wasn't accessable. I went to Dell.com and downloaded the XP drivers and installed according to directions. Now, my computer doesn't recognize either drive.

I've downloaded the XP2 BIOS update, which didn't help. I've looked everywhere for Samsung DVD drivers, but can't find them. I did find one at samsungelectronics.com, but it wouldn't install.

What's wrong? Why won't my BIOS see my dvd and cd/rw drives? I get the error message at bootup:

secondary hard disk drive 0 not found
secondary hard disk drive 1 not found

Go into your bios and select auto detect for those drives if you haven't already.

I've tried that - I can't understand why my BIOS won't see these drives. If you look at the boot sequence, cd-rom is listed, but it says none installed.

When I tried to go back to the old samsung firmware from dell's site, it hangs up.

When I boot with the new firmware from dell, it acts like it's really gonna work. It's says:

a:\>flash f001.bin
Flashdos 1.00 test
Flash download program for atapi drive
[80][EB][14] Secondary Master OK:
[80][EB][14] Secondary Slave OK:

Download wait...fail
Download wait...fail
Download wait...fail
Download wait...fail
Download wait...fail
Download wait...fail

A:\

I've read something about live update from Samsung (one of the first to use something like this for firmware updates), but it was promised in October, then November, then December, and now January 10th.

The download thing at the end acts like it wants to go to the net.

My CD-ROM an CD/RW drives are not recognized, too. Only if they have a disc inside when I boot up. But when I open and close the drives and try to open they the error message 'drive is not accessible' appears. With the floppy drive it's the same, only that sometimes when I try to open A:\ the computer restarts. Please help!

I have exactly the same problem. I've at least gotten "My Computer" to recognize my Sony CD-RW, but it still isn't functional. My DVD might as well not be attached. I can't see a trace of it in the BIOS, DOS-Based driver updates, or Windows XP. I've tried a thousand different driver updates, and nothing has seemed to work. I spent 2.5 hours on the phone with Dell today, and they don't have a clue either. I'm sorry this wasn't much help, but at least you know some other poor b---tard is going through the same bulls---.
