Comment:
Just purchased a JVC Digital video Camera GRD 250.
It has the ability like all dv cameras to take a photo which it stores on the tape.
Q... It comes with no software. can anyone suggest how to get the still images down onto the computer.
It is attached via the firewire cable only and programs like Studio and Power director only capture the movie which it converts into mpg.
Any suggested re software that scans the tape for the pics only would be appreciated.
I am unable to find the softwar at JVC...
Can't believe such a simple thing can be so difficult.
Thanks in advance to all who answer.

When you connect the camera up - does it not provide a new drive on your Pc - on my camera ( a Sony ) when i connect it - under My computer i get a G drive (removable disc)
I then go into the first two folders and the jpegs are there

Are you sure the image gets stored on tape??
Most Camcorders that I know of (mine included, Panasonic) does not store a still image on the tape. The image gets stored on a separate memory card just like a regular digital camera.
My movies go on the DV tape, and my images get stored on a normal memory card which I remove and place in a card reader (as in a normal digital camera).

Hi
the jvc grd250 i think is mini DV only no
Compact flash, so you will have to download the DV to hardrive via firewire
apps to play with...

My Sony DV camcorder takes a single frame shot and actually re-records it on the tape for 5 seconds.
So, it is a movie and not a still image. It is 5 seconds of the same frame that appears on the movie as a still image.I like the idea of the separate memory card for still images.

Hi...Thanks for the replies...............Since my last post, I returned the GR-D250AA to the shop and upgraded to the GR-D290AA.
The 290 has a USB connection & Memory card.
Friends of mine have a Panasonic and the Software scans the tape and downloads the pics automatically at a fast rate.. This is an older Panasonic,,, about 3 years,
To play the tape and capture via video editing software is too slow a process.
Anyway the only problem I now have with the 290 is that Windows XP does not recognize it when in tape mode...(It does with the memory card)
So.. If i want to put hundreds of pics on a tape at high res, I would like the software to recognize it and download from the tape via scanning software similar to the panasonic. (DV Studio)
Also...since windows does not recognize it when in tape mode, How do I use i as a Webcam???
Apparently when in Memory card mode ...WinXP treats it like a hard drive and I can jsut transfer the pics over except the card only holds 21 pics at high res.
That's why I prefer to snap all on a tape ..that way I can store hundreds ...
I hope I have not bored whoever is reading this...
Any help would be appreciated with thanks in advance.
