duplicate name on network

Comment:
Recently I've started getting the Windows error message "duplicate name on network" when I boot up. Looking at older posts, I renamed "my computer" but this had no effect.
It could be referring to another machine on your network. How many machines do you have on your network?

Sorry, You don't rename "My Computer". You right-click on "My Computer" and pick Properties or go to Control Panel and double-click the System icon.
Then choose the Computer Name tab, click on Change button. Type in a new computer name, click OKs till you exit out of everything, reboot your computer.

And...if you're getting that error on a computer at work, you should check with your IT people, as they may have specific naming conventions for machine names.
