Comment:
whenever I tried logging onto a users notebook ( XP Professional SP2 ) I would get a popup message illustrating " duplicate name exists on network ". I know there are no computer names with the same names on the network, and I was wondering what some of you who have experienced the same have done to correct this. I changed the name of the machine, is there a hotfix or other type of patch that I should have installed. Thanks

If the system is OK then it is telling you the truth. Change the name (maybe even the IP address) and see if that corrects it. Might look for hosts or lmhosts files??

Obviously there is another computer on the network with the same name as the one you're using.
What type of naming convention are you using for your systems?

thanks for the input Jefro and Jennifer, I could'nt believe it but there were two machines on the network with the same name. the naming convention we use is a combination of the the office and an assigned asset tag number. Thanks again
