Hi

I have some old machines running 800Mhz, 256Megs ram, 6G HD which I would like to use for surfacing the net, I need to be able do use java, shockwave, word, flash, windows media, quicktime, realplayer plug-in etc. as most sites need them, I need to setup as a shell only (dumb terminal) so no other programs are needed to save space and improve speed and lock it down so the user can't do anything to it apart from the internet. Was thinking of using IE or firefox. I looked at some MS lock down program which not sure will be ideal or maybe even Linux OS.

Any suggestions?

Slap a custom knoppix cd/dvd in there and go on. See other live cd's too. Spins on fedora are good. Puppy and DSL are a bit basic if you want everything.

You can only control the access if you restrict physical access. Remote firewalls and routers help secure the access.

A dumb terminal is normally less than what you have.

I read it wrong and answer it wrong too. So get off my case you peanut.

Was thinking of using Virtual PC 2007 so when we restart it everything goes back to the default state.

I have fedora 6, Ubuntu 5 and knoppix V5.1 CD but not sure if they will browse most website with java, flash etc.

java and flash is no problem with linux distros, activeX maybe.

and using a virtual machine on such a low spec computer doesn't make sense.

if you want the machine go back to default with each reboot, get deepfreeze.

With the Live-CD version there is no need for virtual systems, in fact it will run with the hard drive removed. If the need is to browse and not download any files that is an easy setup. The impact from the older hardware is minimized that way. A virtual system would need a faster CPU and more RAM to be efficient.

Ok, the virtual PC is out, what about BSD, just read it's free just like fedora so could use this also? I think I need active X and HD with 6G already inside, I probably don't need Live CD, have to think about this option also.

Is there anything free or cheap to do what deep freeze can do?
