Hi,

I have windows xp installed on the c: drive with NTFS.

I then used partition magic to make a new fat32 partition. I then installed windows 98se onto the partition.

how do i get the option of which i can bootup?

i have to manually change which is the active partition by going into fdisk each tiem i want to change, for example:

if active partition is set to xp, i have to restart with boot disk in, go to fdisk and change the active partition to the fat32 one.

is there no way of just choosing which OS to boot at the start?

thanks

Dear Boy (by boydonegood),

This is for your referene. I never used NTFS. I am using FAT32 and installed ME and XP. There is no problem with booting. When the boot screen is displayed I can choose which OS to start.

I think the problem is with NTFS and FAT. Remove NTFS and make it FAT32, install XP. It will work!

Thank you

sree

Hi,

The straightforward way is to use only FAT and onstall w98 first.

Xp will set up dual boot.

thanks for the responses.

so i have to install 98 first, no other way about it?

if i install 98 with fat32, then install xp after with ntfs, will it work that way? or does it HAVE to be fat32?

cheers

AFAIK,

You could use an NTFS partition. A separate one; because w98 must be on FAT.

One thing to keep in mind here is that you still won't be able to access anything on the NTFS partition while in Win98. Using FAT32 for both, corrects that problem.

thanks for the help guys. but one more question.

if i go about it the following way:

format my c: totall

install windows 98se.

boot up 98 and install xp on new partition.

this is the best way but surely this would mean that 98 will be on C: and xp will be on G: (cd drives between)??

any way of making it the other way round, so 98 is on g: and xp is on c:??

any help appreciated

Are you trying to do this because G is a different size, or simply because you want the drive letter assignment a certain way?

simply because id like it set a certain way. so when installing programes through xp it can go onto the C: as thats the default and its what im used to.

the 98 partition will only be about 1 gb, as its used for running very old games.

Once XP is installed, you can assign drive letters.

I would be very careful though. Things can get pretty confused, pretty quick.

WRONG. If you try to change the drive letter assignment after the operating systems are installed you will screw up both.
You CANNOT change the drive letter assignment of a SYSTEM DRIVE.

You can't change the drive letter assignment for the OS drive. So that wouldn't help. Changing the path for an installation isn't a big deal.

what do you mean changing the path for an installation isnt a big deal?

surely if i select it to be installed as d then it will go on my second hard drive, and not on the first but as drive letter D.

confused? i am.

must be an easier way :S

"so when installing programes through xp it can go onto the C: as thats the default and its what im used to". This is your statement. No matter where the OS you are working in is installed, most programs default to a path that will be on that partition. If however the path is wrong, it is no big deal to change it. Ever since Win95 programs have given the option to install anywhere on the computer. As far as installing Win98 on the G: partition goes, if you follow the link in reply #5, that is how your system would end up. I believe that if you were to install WinXP by removeing and recreating new partitions and then installing WinXP then reassigning the other drive letters before installing Win98, you could end up with WinXP on C:, Win98 on D: and the optical drives would follow.

Dear boy (by boydonegood),

From my experience;

Prepare the drives your want to install XP and 98 i.e., moving files and folders to other location; except current OS files.

Get a 98 boot disk, insert it to Floppy drive, Format C. Also you can format the drive you are going to use 98.

Install 98 into your 'other'(not in C) drive.
Install drivers.

After you configured 98, insert the XP CD into CD Drive. The autorun will ask for you to upgrade, Clean install.

Choose clean install.

After copying and restarting, you can select advanced options> choose 'I want to choose the OS Partition'.

It will ask you want to create NTFS partition. Choose No.

Then it will ask where to install XP, Choose C., you are half done.

Choose other options.

After the completion of installation, restarting, you can easily choose which OS to boot from the menu.

Thank you

sree
