Hi all,
Some months ago, after creating a 98/XP
dual-boot system, I wrote to enquire whether
it was advisable to defrag one operating system from the other, and if so, which was the best one to use for the OS, and many other partitions.
The concensus was that XP was the best to use, and safe to defrag the entire machine. I tried this and indeed, I have encountered no malfunctions as a result of doing so.
However, I often use the XP defragger, only to still see red lines (fragmented files) and even more white lines (free space) after the defrag, which XP seem unable
to sort, even after a recommended dual pass.
From what I hear I am not alone in this.
So, after an XP defrag, I experimented going into 98's and it finds loads of things
to defrag, albeit MUCH more slowly, but much
more thoroughly from my experience.
I then went back into XP's defragger, (laborious I know), and sure enough, all the red/white bits have now sorted
themselves out (via 98)and the XP defragger whizzes through it.(tho not on my xp OS drive!)
So, what's the story? Is (my) XP defragger wrecked, or IS the 98 really the best one to use,
even if slower?Any 'knowledgeable' responses?
Cheers KevH
