I'm trying to fix a computer for a friend. We had a version of XP that would not boot correctly. So we attempted a reinstall. Now we have 2 versions. The old version has control of data that we want on the new version. Is there any way to transfer the data between the copies when they're on the same drive? Thanks

To properly correct the problem you are going to have to be more spesific. What to versions of windows do you have loaded and if the two versions are on the same drive you should be able to access the data whichever version you use. If the old version would not boot properly why wouldn;t you just format and start clean? Are the versions on different partitions?
With the info you have given I suggest going into the first version in safe mode to log in or formatting and reinstalling windows completely
