You can install the upgrade clean, you don't need to install it over th etop of 98! this should solve your prob!

sounds like you upgraded not dual booted.
usually works like this if 98 on 1 HD("C")
partition drive into 2
install 98 into "C" partition
from within 98 install XP into other partition
this sets up the dual boot (MBR on "C")
XP actually overwrites the 98 startup files to set up the dual boot

okay to response one, I have tried a clean upgrade, with xp pro, and it seems to write over both drive "c" (98) and "d"(xp). so that doesn't work because I want to have 98 on there untill everything is compatable with XP, then I will have no use for 98, but untill that happens, some of us still need the old stuff.:)

and to response 2, I have done that, I have partitioned my 60GB HD into 6 10G partitions, when I install 98 on both C and D that works fine, but then when I upgrade 98 on D to XP is when I get this error, and 98 is not acessable any more, it says it needs to boot off a disk, and then when I put the 98 boot disk in, it goes fine.

but if I don't boot off the disk that is when I get the ntldr error message

if you have a cd burner , burn a boot floppy on cdr media , go into your bios and change settings to detect cdrom first.

boot with 98 cdr to rive D win98 and start upgrade , this way it will look for ntdlr on the disk and not on floppy drive.

hope this works

Or you can just download Win XP Professional Corporate Edition (Full Install) from KaZaA like I did.

when i did this i also had trouble, i had to install 98 onto both partitions/drives then update the C:\ with WIN XP Home, this worked fine, however when doing this only format the drive as FAT 32, not NTFS otherwise Win 98 wont be able to access the C:\.

the problem is that you installed 98 on 2 partitions and then did an upgrade not a fesh/new install of XP.Even with an upgrade copy of XP CD you can do a fresh/new install
follow my previous advice and it will work.Remember only install98 into the "C" primary partition then from within 98 install XP as a new install onto the next partition.this is the only way you will get the dual boot. The install screens are easy
to follow.
take a look at this website
http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_sg_clean.asp
it has pictures of the install screens
good luck.....post back if more problems
