I have an XP machine where I used to dual boot. I took away Win 2000 and the screen is still there that has you choose win xp or win 2000. I tried to reformat the HD, but apparently that doesnt work. Can someone tell me how to get rid of this?

One way: Start > Settings > Control Panel > System Advanced > [Startup and Recovery] Settings > Edit
Delete the line referring to Windows 2000. But be careful that you delete the right line!

check your boot.ini in your root dir. It marked as read-only. Un-check the read-only and modify the boot.ini with notepad, then save the file. Reboot and see if it makes any diff.

Good one ip256. Just what do you mean by "Modify the boot.ini" Which line should he modify? All of them? What? Change everything to ooooops? Please give meaningful advice.
In the boot.ini If XP is your default operating system the only modification needed is to change the timeout value to 0 "Zero". Before changing your boot.ini you should make a backup.
