Hi Guys can you help me? After reading about the compatability problems with XP I have decided to do a dual boot.
I have a 30gb hdd ,1 partition 50/50 C+D,98SE on C, data on D.I want to fresh install XP on D. I am a novice at this will Xp be able to access my document files that I have set up for 98 (I will set Xp FAT 32) and programs such as Office 2000 or games or will I have to install for the benefit of Xp on D.
Hopefully eventually all my peripherals will have Xp compatible drivers and I will be able to use Xp exclusively. Now a question how can I remove 98SE from my system so leaving just Xp as the OS without any booting problems .I have a full version of XP pro so I can upgrade 98SE on C but I guess I cannot uninstall XP from a fresh install on D.Can I upgrade 98SE on C and reformat D therefore having Xp on C and a fresh D partition???How would I do this?
Thanking you for your help John.

If you want to remove 98, edit your boot.ini file and remove the line that refers to 98. eg c:\="windows 98" you can either reboot with xp cd and select R for recovery fixmbr fixboot this should replace your boot files or you could edit your boot.ini and add the line
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS
this should boot xp to partition 2 d:\
you can then delete/ format c:\or you can use norton ghost to copy your xp partition to cd, fdisk / format partitions so you have a blank disk - replace ghost image back to hard drive selecting partition size you require make sure you choose correct partition to ghost
hope this helps
mark.
