Ok, I first need to know if it is possible to have a dual boot with win 98, and win2k, but wheres the catch, i don't want to have a boot menu, I just want it to boot straight into 2k. And i also would need some sort of way to boot win98, maybe through a startup disk or something.

The main reason for that is that i dont want the person knowing win98 is installed. even tough they will be able to see the partition I dont care about that.

Thank YOU, PLZ HELP!

install a second hard drive, put 98 on one and 2k on the other. then you can change the boot order in the bios for whatever os you want to start

Just put 98 on its own partition and change the bootup delay to 0. Set the default OS to 2k.

Well you can install both os and then edit the boot.ini and remove the line for win 98. To do this boot into XP right click on my computer, properties, then the advanced tab, then startup and recovery click settings then set XP as default os and set the boot time to 0 then click on edit and remove the line for win 98. Make a back up copy of the ini so that you can re-add the line anytime you want to boot into 98

just an idea to try- should work for NT but for 2K, I am not sure

1) install win98 and then win2K on a separate partition so as to have the boot menu created for you.
2) upon this you will get both os displayed on boot up. Win2K should be the default OS.
3) When in Win2K(or Win98), look for boot.ini in the root directory, and make a backup of it called boot98.ini. Edit boot.ini and remove the win98 option from the list operating systems, leaving default pointing to Win2K. Save it. Now, you should have removed the win98 boot up from the boot menu now. Now, edit your boot98.ini and replace the default with the win98 partition, while leaving the OS list alone. It does not matter as only you will use this boot file.
4)Now, all you have to do is to rename the boot98.ini file to boot.ini(while backing up the original as maybe boot2K.ini) whenever you want to boot to win98.

have fun

Really?? I've never had a problem setting it to 0. Either has Microsoft.

Microsoft® Windows® 2000 Scripting Guide

Configuring Computer Startup OptionsAdministrators can control both the default operating system loaded by a computer and the amount of time that users are given to choose an alternate operating system when the computer starts. This allows administrators to:

Specify the default operating system on computers that have multiple operating systems installed.

Minimize (or maximize) the amount of time it takes for a computer to start.

If the operating system wait time is set to 0 seconds, the computer automatically loads the default operating system without giving the user an opportunity to choose an alternate system. This can help prevent users from choosing a valid but typically inappropriate operating system such as the Windows 2000 Recovery Console. It also helps the computer start faster because the computer does not have to wait for 30 seconds before it begins to load the operating system.

Format a floppy in W2k and copy the 4 files boot.ini BOOTSEC.DOS ntdetect.com and ntldr to the floppy.
Right click My Computer /Properties/ Advanced/Settings - change the default OS to W2K with timeout zero.
(Why not change it to say 3secs just to check it out ?)
Without the floppy in the computer will boot into W2K without any choice. With the floppy in the machine will still give you a choice of W98 or W2K.
PS I now use the system with XP - it works the same way. Good Luck
