Dual BOOT with XP Pro & Win 98

February 2, 2009 at 08:41:23
Specs: Windows XP, P4/3ghz/800fsb/1gb
I have a need to run win 98. I would also like XP pro on the same machine so I can use the DVD burner and some other stuff. I am reading conflicting ways of setting this up. I have just scrubbed the drive so this is a "fresh" start and I can load up whatever way is best. I have both discs and keys... I would like to patch both once they are loaded too. please advise as to the "best" way to dual boot these two operating systems. thank you in advance for your assistance!

Run fdisk and partition your drive in two. Install 98 on C, then after that is installed and working, install XP on the second partition.

You don't need XP for the DVD-burner (if that were your sole intent for using XP). Win98 will burn DVD's just the same (as long as you have burning software that will do it)...

Partition the HDD into at least two partitions. You'll then need to formt. If you want to be able to view the XP partition from 98, you'll have to format both as FAT32. The Microsoft formating tool has a false 32GB limitation, so keep that in mind when creating partitions. If you use the HDD manufacturer's software, you can create FAT32 partitions as large as you like.

Once you've partitoned & formated, install 98 on C:\. After it's all setup, pop in the XP CD (do this from within 98) & wait for the disc to spin up. You'll be asked if you'd like to update...select ADVANCED & direct XP to install on D:\. The rest will proceed as a normal install. The Boot menu will be automatically setup.
