I have bought a Dell Latitude C640 with Windows XP Home installed. Can I install as a dual boot option XP Pro? I have not received the item yet, but the system has a new 40GB hard drive, 512MB RAM, upgraded from Windows 2000 Pro, 20GB hard drive, 256MB RAM. I have my own XP Pro system backed up on a WD external drive with legal key. The laptop this system was on has been sold. A full format was done and a Linux distro was installed to erase all personal data. If nothing else, can I simply plug in my external drive and run it?

google Software Piracy.
Read the End User License agreement that came with the Laptop and your current Computer.
There is nothing to learn from someone who already agrees with you.

I no longer have the laptop nor did I do the install of the OS on the laptop, so I don't have a EULA. I thought you can retain the OS as long as you are running it on one PC.If that is wrong, please tell me.

XP Pro, I acquired it when I bought the laptop on ebay. I have read other EULA's and most of them allow for one backup.

What would be the point? What is it that you think you can do with XP Pro that you can't do with XP Home? And you could use more RAM...either that or go back to Win2000.

laptops come with OEM versions of the OS. The OS lives and dies with the laptop.
You will not be able to use a backed up version of xp to install to your new to you laptop. You need an xp install to make your multiboot.
