I have done a virus scan

How about Spyware scans ???
Most Virus and Spyware scans are likely to work better in Windows Safe-Mode.

This should remove any recent Updates ----
Try System Restore to a date when all was good.
Start >All Programs >Accessories >System Tools

Using System Restore too many times can cause
more harm than good. After doing a restore
that does not fix a problem, then UNDO the
Restoration, and try another restore point, or
just do the UNDO.

NOTE ---
Do not remove any Windows Updates via Add/Remove Programs. You may remove them in the wrong order, then your XP would become unstable.

Description of the Dr. Watson for Windows (Drwtsn32.exe) Tool

The Dr Watson log file is used by technical persons to solve problems with programs, and may be quite large.

How to disable Dr. Watson for Windows
----------------------------
Right click My Computer,
then Properties,
then Automatic Updates tab,
Then you can change the setting there to Manual. That way you will not get the Update back.
