I am assuming you are using a 56k. I find that on a dial up, a dropped connection is mainly because of your provider and/or if you have incoming calls. If you can afford the couple extra bucks a month I'd recommend getting Cable or Broadband as its bascially another phone line and much, much, faster. Either then that, I dont know. Sorry.
