I got this printer on my linux server running samba so I can share them for Windows

In W98 all I need to da is to
'Add Printer' [next]
'Network Printer' [next]
'Then select which printer'
(\\server\shared printer) [next]
'Select ANY driver that support PS+'
(HP > HP LaserJet IIIP postscript +' [next]

and it works !!!

BUT HOW THE @"#[é##@é# DO I GET MY PRINTER WORKING IN XP ?!

I can't just INSTALL a driver and AFWTERWARDS point to a SHARED printer on the network

I tried 'ADD PRINTER' [next]
'Network printer' [next]
'Browse for ...' I select it [next]
and then it start asking for a driver location ... Why doesn't it just gives the list with all available drivers with the option button 'Have Disk' That is what I need !!!

I tried something else to ..

Open explorer .. My network .. Select the shared printer ... connect .. same problem .. but after a while I user properties and 'Print Test page' Then it will ask for a printer again .. I select the 'HP ... just like in W98' .. But then it start whinig about ;'Can not find drivers' .. What kind of s--- is this ???

Anyone knows how I can USE XP in a NETWORK ?? or was that asked to much .. dûh .. Great work Bill !!!

Please just tell me it IS possible !!
I'm not buying a printer for each PC :-)
just because I need XP sometimes

Ummm when XP asks for the driver location after you try installing it, you can then browse to drivers that you've downloaded and saved on your local machine.
Basically, the printer on the Linux server doesn't have the drivers for XP installed so you have to install them from a different source (like your workstation's hard drive)....

I'm not a Linux guy, but it might be easier to just go to the shared printer on the Linux server and add the drivers there. Then when you connect to the printer with XP they'll automatically download (I think - again, not a Linux guy)....

That's the whole problem..

There are no drivers for XP on the HP site.
They say you have to use the drivers from XP itself .. Actually I intended to do that,
but XP doesn't show me the window where I just can select one from the list of available printers.

I tried to install a local pinter, then installed the right drivers from the available list.. aftwerwards I wanted to change LPT1 to the \\server\shared_printer .. but it is not possible.

There is a button that allows to select a NEW PORT, so I tried it, but I can only select 'Local port 'lpt,..) or TCP/IP port. What about 'Browse for printer' ?
