If you are seeing a USB mass storage device listed in Device manager then it is already being configured.

If you have a HARD drive installed into the external enclosure (USB mass storage device) and it is not showing up in My Computer then look for it in Disk Management.

The same would apply to other external media.

Because I have several other USB ports that are out of date along with the USB mass storage device after scanning with Driver Detective software. The available dowload is the Native USB disk driver for Windows 98SE ver.3.3 but it isn't compatible for my version. However only one USB port is working right now.

Also I'm using Service Pack 2 which is recommended for my computer.

Who said SP2 is recommended? You should be running SP3. That would probably update the USB drivers. Try installing the motherboard chip set drivers from the manufacturer's site. If the computer is a pre-built, like a Dell, get them from the makers site.

The USB controllers would be part of a larger download.

Download SIW to determine what Intel chip set/s are on your motherboard. Then you could go to the Intel site to download the package.

Get SIW at the link below.

All that said, SP3 will probably bring the drivers up to date.

Thanks for the info. I was unsure about SP3 because I didn't think I need it. I'm assuming SP3 would overwrite SP2 or something due the large download?

It does replace parts of SP2. That is how MS updates work.
