Does anybody know the name of the INF file for the network card driver on the Win XP installation disk?

Thanks in advance.

The XP install CD has an archive called driver.cab

all the drivers are contained within this .cab file.

If you have a program like WinZip or WinRAR, you can view the contents of .cab files.

That way you can navigate your way through the driver.cab to find the specific driver you need.

Do this from within windows, with your XP install CD in the CD drive.

Thanks I found it. Those file names mean nothing to me, any clue which is a network driver?

Thanks again.

The network card driver? There is no single generic network card driver. Are you trying to install the NDIS driver, perhaps? If not, you should install whatever driver you are trying to install through the device manager. Unless you have a specific reason to do otherwise - do you? If so, please ask a more detailed question. I guarantee you'll get a better answer.

Its a long story, but the short of it is I had to format the drive to install Windows Server 2003.

The network card stopped working after that and all attempts to install the proper drivers has failed (through Device Manager, Add New Hardware and letting Plug and Play detect it.)

It just doesn't like the driver I'm giving it. Yes, I downloaded the latest driver from the company's website. "The INF file was not what was expected" or something to that effect.

I hoped that if I could find the driver that Win XP installs I could get it working again.

Again, there is no "the" driver that XP installs. You need the correct driver for your card.

If you can locate the correct XP driver (which is more than just the .inf file, by the way) for your specific card you might be able to use it. However, if the official supported driver has already failed to install, you're probably not going to have much more luck with the XP driver.

What is the network card?

It is a NETGEAR FA310TX REV-D2.

This computer was given to us to replace one that got fried so I didn't know what was in it till I opened it the other day. It came with none of the original installation software. Not that I expected to need it.

It was already recomended that I junk the card and get a new one. This is starting to look like the easiest (and maybe only) fix.

Thanks for all your help.
