Hello all!

I recently changed the firmware on my RIM Blackberry cell phone by connecting my phone to my desktop and changing it on there. Then I tried to connect my phone to my laptop, and it brought up the "Add new hardware" screen.

Now, I had had my phone connected to my laptop before, and was successfully transferring files and data back and forth, but I figured that since I changed the firmware, the laptop needed to recognize it again. So I directed "Add new hardware" to the exact driver folder and clicked okay. It found the correct driver instantly (rimusb.sys) and began to install it. However, the installation failed a few seconds later with this error message:

There was a problem installing this hardware:
BlackBerry Device

An error occurred during the installation of the device
The system cannot find the file specified.

I've only been successful at re-creating this error, by directing it to find the driver in Windows/inf, Windows/system32/drivers, the installation CD, and even Windows Update. Every time I try it, it finds the correct driver, tries to install it, but then fails and tells me that the system cannot find the file specified.

In trying to figure out what the problem was, I uninstalled one of my 4 USB Root Hubs and tried to reinstall it by directing it to the correct driver. It also found the correct driver, tried to install it but then immediately failed and told me that it cannot find the file specified, the same error as with the BlackBerry driver.

So I've narrowed it down to a systemic problem and not a single issue (i.e., my cell phone). Saying this, I've also tried uninstalling and reinstalling the software that came with the BlackBerry: no dice. I read online that this problem (or a similiar one) may have had to do with lack of Administrator access, and even though the only user profile on my laptop has full access, I created a separate user with full admin access only to bump into the same problem.

I appreciate any help that you may offer. Thank you in advance, and happy new year!

It may have to do with the previous driver being corrupted in your laptop. Search your installation CD for an uninstallation program and run it in your laptop and then re try to install the new driver....
