Ok this might sound ridiculous but why is it when i download new drivers for windows xp i go into device manager and when i look at the hardware eg. wireless adapter, and check the driver tab it is still the old one yet i know i installed a new one do I have to click on update driver.

Downloading the driver is only that.. it must be updated in Control Panel, as you suggested. If the update feature does not work, you must follow the prompts to select your device, then match with the new driver.
