Drive polling is very slow, locks up

Microsoft Windows xp home sp2
March 24, 2010 at 22:42:36
Specs: Windows XP, SP 2, 1.5 GB, 2.5 GHz
About 3/4 of the time when I use a program to save or load a file (it doesn't matter which program) and click the down arrow next to the "Look in" or "Save in" at the top of a dialog box to change the directory, it locks up. I have to wait for several minutes (sometimes as long as 10 or more) for it to come back up and become unfrozen. What is happening here? I'm not sure if it's because I have several network shares from other PC's.

I've also had times where I would click START and the Start Menu would also freeze for several minutes.

Does anyone know what the problem might be? How can I fix this? Thanks.

Yeah i've had this problem too. Drama's with the network shares and explorer. I noticed your only running sp2, why dont you download service pack 3?
