I have just taken my old system disk (40Gb) out of my puter & replaced it with a 160Gb little number. I have re-installed win XP Pro on the new disk & also installed my old 40GB in the chassis so that I can transfer files etc. Everything looks good - except...! 'My Computer' shows the new disk (C:) but no sign of my old disk. They are both set to cable select & using the correct cable. BIOS & Hardware setting shows both disks as good but my old disk is without a drive letter & so cannot be displayed in 'My Computer'. Could it be that my old disk also used to be labelled as C:? Any help much appreciated, thanks...

did you go to admin tools, open storage, and see the old disk?? if its seen there, you may have a chance to reset the letter.
try running the old disk without a jumper also

Have you tried powering off and back on?
Personally, I would have left the old drive as C: installed the new drive as D: and moved your 'My documents' folder to the new drive.

Thanks to all so far...
Admin tools/disks shows the disk fine but won't let me do anything to it apart from 'delete partition'!
I've tried powering off/on & disconnecting & reconnecting the drive, windows chose letter 'c' automatically!

If you are using cable select, the drive at the end of the cable becomes C: and the drive connected to the middle connector becomes D:
Carefully check the plugging again. You might want to consider using Master/Slave.

aegis/jennifer, OK I shall try the master/slave route - although probably tomorrow now as I'm going out.
aegis - that is exactly how they are connected, i've checked. However, drives 'D' & 'E' have been assigned to my DVD & CD-R respectively.

You can change the drive letters of the drives. Right click My Computer, select Manage, Storage, Disk Management. Select the drive and then 'Change Drive Letter and Paths...'. Proceed through the process to change the letter.
I suggest assigning the optical drives letters that are well down in the alphabet to keep them together and separate from the hard drives, but it's your choice. I have my optical drives set to Y: and Z:

Guys, thanks for all your help. Not sure what I done but I unplugged everything & started over. Lo & behold, I can now see both drives!!! I swear I put everything back the exact same way - it doesn't figure. Maybe I've got an intermittent faulty cable?
aegis; I changed the drive letters thanks - I just couldn't change the missing drive until it showed up - thanks again...;o)
