I've just upgraded my computer from Windows 98 to Windows XP, but now my cd-drive can't get detected in Windows XP. I've checked the IDE BUS controller and both IDE channel are enabled. The drive is detected in the start-up process.

I had a similar problem: Upon installing Windows XP, I made the mistake of putting on Liveware! 3, which promptly made my CD-ROM drives invisible despite my best efforts :(
Your prob might well be caused if you're upgrading Win 98 to XP, rather than doing a clean install.
In which case, I can only recommend you do what I did: reformat and reinstall as a clean installation.
I dare say there'll be somebody out there that has a better solution though ;)

I can only tell you what finaly worked for me. I moved my cd burner from the slave position on the primary IDE to master on the secondary IDE channel. I've had no problems since.
