Have you tried a repair install yet?
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/...
You need an install disc to do it.Or if you have an install disc you may want to try start/run and then type in sfc /scannow
It will replace any defective windows filesSome HELP in posting on Computing.net plus free progs and instructions Cheers

Be careful with the System Restore Idea unless you do not care about any files you stored on your drive.
It sounds like one of your partitions was not formatted. Which drive do you have as your bootable partition? I am guessing it is not C: unless you are booting from a CD.
You can find all of this information under Computer Management by Right-Clicking "My Computer" in your start menu and then choosing "Manage" on the menu. Then go down to Disk Management. Here you can see all of your partitions.
Tell us what it says to the right of C:. It should say
"Healthy (System, Boot, ...)"
If not let us know and also let us know which drive does say this because we may need to switch drive letters.

Ace you say "Be careful with the System Restore Idea unless you do not care about any files you stored on your drive." What is your reason for this?
Regards

Well first back up every files that is important then do those things that you are advised to do.

I also have similar kind of problem. This happen when i try to
format my F drive keeping "enable compress option" ticked. It
took a long time to get formated and finally a message came
stating that driver formatting is unsuccessful. after that when
ever i click on the drive it says please format the drive. if i press
yes an another message saying " cannot be formatted " please
reply me how can i recover it. There is no files in it but 40GB
space is getting waste.
