defragntfs.exe is a virus, there is no such file normally found in XP.
defrag.exe is the defraging program found in XP.

Kurt, defragntfs.exe is NOT a virus but is indeed a viable Windows 2000 & XP file and is located in the System32 folder.
What is it?
Windows Defrag - dfrgntfs.exeWhat does it do?
This is the process in Windows 2000 and XP that handles the file defragmentation process. This helps to speed up things like opening and reading files which will make it so that your applications run as fast as they can on your system. NEVER end this process, if you do it can cause corruption in whatever file it was processing when you ended it.dfrgntfs.exe is a Windows System File and should be in a system directory. If it is then this application is safe.

rattin232, Do you have defrag set up to run in Task Scheduler or do you have a 3rd party defrag program set up on a schedule. If you do that is what's causing this to run. If you don't have you recently run the Windows XP defrag and stopped it before it completed? You can find a possible solution at one of the many links/threads at the search link below. You don't have to download TweakUI.

I would download startup control panel from www.freeware.com
Once installed, goto start button-->control panel-->startup (you may have to switch to classic view to see this icon, located on the left blue menu of xp)
Open this up and disable all the programs you dont recognize, then reboot. This program will locate all the places programs can startup from, its really a useful tool. This should fix the problem. good luck :)

tufenuf we both might be right.
there is both defrag.exe and dfrgntfs.exe in the system 32 folder. The poster said he has defragntfs.exe which depending if the poster spelled it wrong could either be a virus or a missspelling.

Kurt, You're absolutely correct I should have checked the spelling more closely.
rattin232, If you see this reply could you let us know whether that file is "defragntfs.exe" or "dfrgntfs.exe".
